Background information on Portela Samba School

GRES Portela conquered 21 titles of Carnaval, being until nowadays the detainer of the largest amount of titles.^[3]

Birthplace of the great Brazilian samba composers, such as Monarco, Zé Keti, Casquinha, Manacéa, Candeia, Aldir Blanc, Paulinho da Viola, João Nogueira, Noca da Portela, Colombo, among others, beyond being one of the most traditional samba schools of Brazil, Portela has an important participation in the cultuaral life of the city during the entire year, through the presentations of her Velha Guarda (Brazilian term for the oldest-ones (among a group of people)) and of her prizewinning bateria, among other things. The school's simbol is an eagle that in all the parades is seen in the abre alas (Brazilian term for car that opens the samba parade in Carnival) of the school. The Velha Guarda also released an album called Tudo Azul in 1999.

Samba Band Sydney practice video for anybody wanting to learn some of unidos da Tijuca Breaks or Bossa.

This video is from one of Rio's powerful samba schools  Unidos da Tijuca Bateria   The video is taken at one of their street rehearsal on Av Venezuela.

I had to wait for a couple of hours in the pouring rain. In this clip Tijuca had just got the drums out of the back of the van and were warming up before playing the 2013 enredo. Here is a quick clip of the some of the breaks from the enredo.

Background information on Sydney's Bateria 61 Samba Band

Bateria 61 was formed by a group of friendly individuals who share a passion for samba. We're on a mission to capture the unique and challenging swing of the carioca sound, and to share the fun with anyone who's keen!

Our founding members have many years of experience playing in similar bands both in Sydney and abroad, including Sambalouco, Samba Frog, G.R.E.S. Alegria and Arrastão in Japan, and Samba Agogo in Wales.

At Bateria 61 Grupo de Samba, we want everyone to be able to experience the fun of samba drumming in Sydney, no matter how much or how little experience you have. We believe that everyone has a rhythm, and we're here to help you find it.

Each month, we devote one of our weekly practice sessions to beginners. If you're new to samba or percussion, then this is the time to come and try something new in a relaxed, friendly environment. We'll provide an instrument for you to play and introduce some simple rhythms to have you playing along with the group in no time.

Carnaval Transatlântico Bloco are 3 British carnival groups led by JP (John Paul Courtney) who went to Rio under the name Carnaval Transatlântico to play with friends from Monobloco & beyond.

Rio - Formado por 45 ritmistas ingleses, o bloco Carnaval Transatlântico faz sua estreia nos Arcos da Lapa neste sábado, às 17h. O professor de música natural da Irlanda, John Paul Courtney, de 35 anos, se apaixonou pele batuque brasileiro e aprendeu a tocar diversos ritmos. Junto com vários outros percursionistas da terra da "Rainha Mãe", o bloco se tornou um sucesso.

Rio Time!  Anybody that has been to Rio to watch or play some samba knows about Rio time!  If it says meet at 5pm, you will be lucky if anybody shows up before 7pm!  More than likely the gig/practice will start about 10pm or even midnight, and everyone said turn up at 5pm!

However on this occasion (not sure if it was because it was 'gringo samba mode') it was only a couple of hours late.  I could only stay for a bit and this was all the video I managed to film of 'Carnaval Transatlântico' gig in Lapa under the Arcos.

Time to jump in a taxi and head up to Santa Teresa with some friends as I wanted to join in with Badalo @ their quadra in Santa Teresa.  Here is a link to Badalo's Facebook page

Ziriguidum Bristol England

In February 2014, 18 members of Ziriguidum travelled to Rio De Janeiro, Brazil to take part in the Carnaval Transatlântico project under the musical direction of John Paul Courtney. 

The project included successful performances at a number of shows and carnival events around the city and attracted an appreciative local audience and considerable media interest in Brazil.

New Rio Samba class in Perth starting on 9th July Nunzio

Learn to play in a Rio-style Samba in Perth with Mestre Nunzio !

About Nunzio Moskito Toscano:

Originally from Italy, Nunzio has spent 6 years traveling back and forth to Brazil to study and work with Beija-Flor, one of the biggest & best samba schools in Rio. He has played at numerous events in various cities, even offering pandeiro workshops, and has studied pandeiro and repique with some of the best teachers in Brazil.

About the Samba class:

Nunzio will focus only on Samba Carioca in these classes. His teaching will include the technique of the instruments, as well as the swing, so important when talking about samba music.
Students will learn some arrangements from Beija-Flor Samba School.

About the group:

Beleza Pura is a project dear to Nunzio's heart. He would like to create a group run like the baterias in Brazil, with the same orchestration.

What do bring:
- Small instrument (if you have one) : agogo, tamboim, ganza, chocalho & caixa.
- Ear-plugs
All big instruments are provided by Beleza Samba School.

How much:
$20 per session (2h)

When?
Wednesday nights from 7pm to 9pm.

Where?
For the first 2 weeks the venue will be the following:
City Farm, Circus building next to the Café.
We are currently looking for another venue to continue classes after the 16th of July.
